More Information About Online Peer Support
The Looking Glass Foundation wholeheartedly believes that recovery IS possible. We have seen it, been through it, and have helped others create new, strong paths for themselves.
The Online Peer Support Program was launched in early 2010. It is a virtual chat room where people can come together in a safe space to support each other and talk about issues they currently struggle with or have overcome. This is a pro-recovery support group, and always has a trained moderator to keep the group space supportive and safe for everyone. How much you want to talk is up to you!
You can just listen, or you can share your thoughts or feelings as you feel comfortable. The group does not discuss numbers, weights, or diets, or other triggering topics, so that everyone can feel safe to talk about how they are feeling. If you’re not sure if something you want to talk about could be triggering for others, you can ask how others would feel discussing it, or ask the moderator to initiate a private chat with you. To get started, please register here.
What is Online Peer Support?
Looking Glass Online Peer Support is offered through web-based conversations among people struggling with disordered eating, weight, or body image issues. Moderated by a trained volunteer, each free session offers a safe, “virtual”, and confidential space for people to talk about what is going on for them, to share experiences, and to benefit from the empathy and understanding of others in a positive, pro-recovery way. Online Peer Support conversations are intended to provide support, as opposed to therapy. Focused on recovery, the chat sessions are non-judgmental and remain safe by avoiding sensitive subjects such as weights, diets, and specific eating disorder behaviours. Participants are welcome to chat or simply observe the flow of dialogue – whatever feels right for them! Online Peer Support is free, completely anonymous, private, and confidential. It is also convenient, accessible from any location where there is internet.
Who can use the service?
Online Peer Support is available to people of all ages, anywhere in Canada, who are experiencing disordered eating, weight, or body image issues. All that is needed is a stable internet connection.
